Hinduism and the Arts
Hindu art uses symbolism to express wisdom and power. Each god has his/her symbol. Symbols help people to identify their gods. Hindu art can be hypnotic and sensual. Art helps to become one with the divine.
Temples: inside the temples there are beautiful, old mural paintings
Yantras: two or three dimensional paintings for meditation, the Hindu version of mandala
Bronze sculpture: The oldest ones, more than thousand years old, show the dancing Shiva
Stone sculptures: Sensual scenes, most famous ones are on the Khajuraho temples
Music: hymns to the gods with rhythms to help reach an altered consciousness
Instrumental music: the mystical ragas. Veena is an ancient instrument, the most famous of all.
Dance: Interprets gods' stories, performed at religious ceremonies
Lotus flower: Associated with purity, fertility, beauty, rebirth and eternity. The goddess Laxmi is usually depicted sitting on a fully open white lotus. Unopened lotus means a folded soul that can open up to the divine.
